Beginners guide to Docker

We can make this more efficient by combining the two commands into a single command inside the Dockerfile. Containers utilize operating system kernel features to provide partially virtualized environments. It’s possible to create containers from scratch with commands like chroot. This starts a process with a specified root directory instead of the system root.

These environmental variables will be referred using throughout the docker compose file. Their values will be automatically pulled from the environment file that we created / edited above. A Home Media Server is a server located in your home network that acts as a central data storage and serving device. Typically, a home server is always on, has tons of storage capacity and ready to serve files when the need arises. We have covered several home server topics in great detail in the past. If you do not yet have a home server or are considering building one, then read this summary on the most common NAS or Home Server uses.

I have added a few important ones already in the docker compose code above. This section is an intro to some of the commands you will use later in this guide. Running them at this point in the guide will throw errors. This is cumbersome on Linux and requires extensive commandline work. Some Linux users swear by this traditional method but most newbies are intimidated by this. It is for this reason that we created AtoMiC ToolKit, which automates installation and maintenance of home server apps on Linux.

There are a few different approaches to managing persistent data. Volumes are storage units that are mounted into container filesystems. Any data in a volume will remain intact after its linked container stops, letting you connect another container in the future.

Creating Images

The cgroups allow for fine-grained control of resources. This prevents a single container to use up all resources. Docker gives you everything you need to work with containers. It has become a key tool for software development and system administration.

Your image now contains everything you need to run your website. In this case, we’re starting from the official Apache image. Docker applies the remaining instructions in your Dockerfile on top of the base image. This will start a new container with the basic hello-world image. The image emits some output explaining how to use Docker. The container then exits, dropping you back to your terminal.

OK Great, but why build a Docker Media Server?

"STATUS" column shows whether a container is running or exited. The last column shows the friendly name of the container. That's it, the basic prep work to build our docker home server is done. So I reading the command below to add the stable repository instead of nightly mentioned above.

The principal benefits are increased isolation and portability for individual services. The use of Docker Compose lets you write reusable container definitions that you can share with others. You could commit a docker-compose.yml into your version control instead of having developers memorize docker run commands. $/shared_data - Path to data you want to share/sync.

Add Linux User to Docker Group

Plexamp music player enhances music listening experience. Having a Ubuntu or Debian system ready is a basic requirement of this guide. Explaining how to install and setup Ubuntu Server is outside the scope of this post. We have covered this extensively in our post on how to install Ubuntu Server and Ubuntu Server disk partitioning guide. Headover to Ubuntu Download page and download the ISO file. For this guide, I am using Ubuntu Server but you could install any flavor of Ubuntu.

Stable repository for Bionic Beaver is not yet available. At this point you will have to use the nightly builds. While nightlies can be unstable, my current home server runs on this without any problems. When stable builds become available here, you can replace nightly with stable in the command below.

Dockerfile and other files

At bare minimum, I recommend OpenSSH server and SAMBA file server. If you are sold, let start preparing for building a docker home server for a smarter home. My choice of operating system for a home server is Ubuntu. While this guide is for Ubuntu users it should work on most Debian-based Linux distributions. This instruction tells Docker CLI to copy hello.sh file from the host to the /app folder inside of the image.

It sits between the computer hardware and the virtual machine. Each virtual machine runs its guest operating system and it has its binaries, applications, etc. The virtual images are usually huge in terms of size and have a big memory footprint. The idea behind containers is to divide an operating system in a way, that you can securely run multiple applications. The Linux features that made that possible are namespaces and cgroups. In short, using namespaces you can slice different components of an operating system and create an isolated workspace.

If you are sold, then consider this low power home server build for your home media server. If you are tight on budget then you may want to consider our budget headless home server build. If you have multiple storage drives, this guide assumes that your RAID is already setup. I am copying the new file before running the apk command. If you rebuild the image again (docker build -t docker-layers) you will notice that the apk commands were executed again and not reused.

You can login to the registry through the Docker Desktop or use the docker login command from the terminal. Containers are more lightweight compared to virtual machines. They don't require a hypervisor which results in faster startup time. Container startup time is usually measured in seconds or less, where the virtual machine startup is measured in minutes.

Using multiple container instances allows for rolling updates as well as distribution across machines, making your deployment more resilient to change and outage. The regular docker CLI targets one host and works with individual containers. Changes made to a container’s filesystem won’t persist after the container stops. It’s not safe to run any form of file storage system in a container started with a basic docker run command. Each instruction in your Dockerfile creates a new layer. You can use advanced building features to reference multiple base images, discarding intermediary layers from earlier images.

If the command succeeded you won't see any output. Note that we could use the tag command to update other parts of the image name as well. Docker Desktop for Mac and Windows is a collection of tools that make working with Docker easier. It contains the Docker Engine, CLI client, and bunch of other tools. Once you have a built image you can push the image to a Docker registry.
